Resumo

The author reports an unusual case of paraplegia in a Spanish jackass, caused by contused fracture of the body and right lamina of the 16th dorsal vertebra. In this case there was continued cutaneous sensitivity to mechanical stimuli, and contraction of the vesical and rectal sphincters did not cease. These observations do not agree with the writings of authors, who cite absence of reflexes and relaxing of the sphincters as accompanying symptoms.

Post-mortem examination revealed a diaphragmatic hernia, localized in the left part of the centrum tendineum, through which a loop of the small intestine had passed into the pleural cavity. No typical symptoms were observed, and this condition was not discovered until the necropsy. It is suggested that the struggles of the animal to free itself from the hobbles with which it was confined may have caused the diaphragmatic rupture.
