As doenças do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) na zona da mata, Minas Gerais

The so-called Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais produced in 1955 about 55,000 tons of beans; that is, 18.5%, of the State total, with a low yield, around 600-700 kg/ha. Among the chief causes of this low yield is the incidence of various diseases.
Anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, and rust, by the fungus Uromices phaseoli var. typica, are the two most important bean diseases in Zona da Mata. Of 54 bean varieties studied in Viçosa, it was found that nine are resistant to anthracnose and nine to rust; six showed resistance to both diseases, of which only two are commercial types. Attention is called to the fact that the present study was done under field conditions and only in Viçosa, with the race or races (?) of the fungi of anthracnose and rust that exist there. Description of symptoms was furnished, as well as methods of control and explanations about the means of dissemination.
In order of importance, aiter the anthracnose and rust come the root rot, caused by several fungi, namely Sclerotium roltsii, and mosaic, a virus disease. The following are of minor importance : angular leaf spot (Isariopsis griseola), powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) and root knot, caused by nematodes (Meloidugyne sp.). The symptoms of all these diseases are given, with explanation of the means of dissemination and control.
The following fungi were already found as parasites on bean, all of very little importance :
Altenaria brassicae phaseolus Sacc.
Cercospora canescens Ell. & Mart.
Phyllosticta phaseolina Sacc.
Rhizoctonia microsclerotia Matz.
Ovularia phaseoli Drummond
