Pink root of onions (4llium cepa L.) caused by Pyrenochaeta - terrestris (Hansen) Gorenz, J. C. Walker and Larson, was found in the research plots at Escola Superior de Agricultura, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, in September 1959. This appears to be the first published record of the fungus in Brazil.
In September 1960 the authors surveyed a number of ; commercial fields in the Ubá, Rodeiro and Guidoval areas of Minas Gerais.-Results indicate that the disease occurs extensivelfiz in the area where it also attacks garlic (Allium : Sativum L.) Despite its frequency, pink root does not apear : to be a serious disease in this part of Brazil.
The fungus has been obtained in pure culture and ino- culation experiments will be initiated next year.
A description and illustration of the fungus are given.
