Seeds of coffee were soaked for 48 hours in aquaeous — solutions of gibberellic acid (0, 10, 100, 1000 mg/1), containing a commercial surfactant. The percentage of germination, as determined up to 200 days after planting, decreased in proportion to the concentration of gibberellic acid. The parchment had no effect on the action of gibberellic acid, but the germination was delayed two to three weeks, as compared to seeds without parchment. It is suggested that the effect of gibberellic acid could be due either to a direct toxic action or to an inhibition of germination, contributing indirectly to the death of seeds.
