Abstract

This paper deals with two surveys made in six pharmacies, a Hospital, a Public Health Center, and with 8 physicians in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

These surveys were made to determine what means this community has to treat cases of snake poisoning. Another aim was to survey the dosages being used to treat snake bite.

The doses of antivenom for Bothrops spp and non specific poisonous snake bites indicated by pharmacists are lower than the minimum initial doses currently recommended. (Tables III and IV).

The physicians, with two exceptions, prescribe lower minimum initial doses of antivenom than the recommended treatment.

Only one physician préscrihes minimum initial doses of antivenom higher than those indicated to treat adult victims of Bothrops spp and Crotalus terrificus bites.

Three points emphasized the fact Crotalus terrificus is absent or very rare in this Municipio: 1) the absence of specific antivenom prescription, by physicians 2) the presence of antivenom in only one pharmacy, and 3) the complete absence of this species during three years of collecting.
