Resumo

Milk is an important product to the State of Minas Gerais, especially in its contribution to the internal income of the State.

In addition, milk is a nearly complete food, providing protein, vitamin, calcium, riboflavin and other elements needed in the human diet.

Thus, a milk consumption study in anarea represents one may toprovidea subsidy toaprogram of consumer education and to influence market forces.

The present study wasrnade in 10 counties of the Zona da Mata, Estado de Minas Geraiis, from October 13 to 31, 1966.

Tabular analysis was used to study the relationship between milk consumption and family income, size of family, formal education of the housewife and number of children less than 15-years old.

The study shows that the milk consumption per month of the urban family unitin Viçosa is 41,8 quarts (liters), while in the rural area of the same county the milk consumption per family unit is 60,00 quarts. The consumption of products derived from milk in the urban area is higher than in the rural area: 3,12kg in the former and 1, 12 kg in the latter.

The study also presents some information that can be sponsored by the Home Economic School and ACAR. Some examples of the findings of the study include the fact wbaboosn affect the milk consumption (in both areas) and that the great percentage of housewives don't know the value of the milk in the diet.
