Meiosis and microsporogenesis in tobacco Nicotiana tabacum L., 'Cultivar Goiano-ESA' were studied.
Plants from seeds obtained from a single plant were used. They were grown in the field, at the Rural University, in Viçosa, Minas Gerais.
Meiosis occured from the 10th -12th day to the 14th 16th day after flower primordia initiation. Anther dehiscence took place on the 24th to the 30th day.
Phenomena of synizesis and citomixis were observed in the zygonema stage, as well as bridgen in the anaphase L. Cell wall was not observed to be laid down during the tran- sition from the heterotypic to homoeotypic division. The homoeotypic division was relatively short.
Free microspores, after a short rest period, became elongated, furrowed and with contracted protoplasm. Next the latter, increased in volume, filling all the inner space of the microspore, when a mitosis occur, resulted in two nucleui.
The pollen grain showed deep pores in the beginning and protruding ones at the maturity.
