Efeito do tamanho das sementes sobre o "stand", produção e altura das plantas, na cultura do feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

The effect of seed size on stand, yield and plant height was studied for field beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) varieties 'Manteigao Fosco 11' and 'Rico 23'. Seed harvested always atthe same locale and in the same period were visually classified into small, medium and large groups and subjected to field testing. The experiment was repeated five times.
The sizes expressed as weight of 100 seeds were different in the five experiments, The variety 'Rico 23' showed the following ranges: 9.6 to 14.4 grams for the small, 16.8 to 21.5 grams for the medium and 20. 9 to 30. 5 for the large size group. In the 'Manteigao Fosco 11' the weight ranges were between 18. 8 and 34,7 for small, 31.4 and 44.7 for medium and 38, 4 and 58. 7 grams for large seed size group.
The small seed of 'Rico 23' may give lower stand, shorter plants and lower yield. Since the seed of this size normally make up only 10 - 15% of the total seed produced it is of small practical importance to classify seed weight before planting.
In the variety 'Manteigão Fosco 11' seed size did not affect the stand and yield, but the plant height may be shorter when the smaller seeds are used.
