Resumo

In order to determine the critical period of competition between weeds and field beans, three experiments were carried out at Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, two during the "rainy" seasonand one during the "dry" season. The treatments included: three variable periods of competition after the emergence ofthe beans, followed by the elimination of the weeds; four periods of the inverse sequence; and one always free of weeds.

One can conclude that maximum yield can be obtained when the bean crop is kept free of weeds for a 30 day period after emergence. The critical period occurs 10-30 days after emergence. When weeds are present during this period, yields may decrease as much as 50-70%.
