The leek (Allium porrum L.) is cultivated in Europe; currently this culture is being developed in Brazil because of its industrial uses in food processing.
Generally, there are two planting methods used. The first method consists of planting sprout by sprout, putting it vertically, and then pushing the earth around it. This planting method used by a great number of the farmers demands much hand labor, which increases the cost of production. The alternate method envolves the arrangments ofall the sprout on their sides in the furrows at one time and then pushing the earth around them.
This experiment was conducted to test the later planting method less commonly used by the Brazilian farmers.
Various plant spacings were also tested.
The experiment was carried outatthe Horticulture Experimental Farm of ESA, UFV (Vigosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil); and lasted a period of seven months.
The methods of planting tested have not affected the production. When the transplant were laid down, longer pseudostalks were produced.
For industrial uses, the best population were 400.000 and 500. 000 plants /ha.
For consuption "in natura', the best population was 100. 000 plants/ha to meet the market standard of the average weight per plant.
