Rice beans (Phaseolus calcaratus Roxb.) is a crop almost unknown in Brazil. Seven varieties of rice beans were included in a preliminary yield trial at Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Four of them yielded more than 2,200 kg/ha of seeds, the best one reaching 2,528 kg/ha. The best varieties of Ph. vulgaris L. usually produce from 1,200 to 2,000 kg/ha at Viçosa. In another trial, one variety of rice beans yielded 33.7 t/ha of green matter, while the jack beans (Canavalia ensiformis D. C.) yielded 25.0 t/ha.
