Resistência horizontal às doenças e diversidade genética no melhoramento do feijoeiro no brasil

In Brazil are planted hundreds and hundreds of common bean varieties (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), almost always showing some degree of varietal mixture. This constitutes a valuable source of germoplasm locally developed. Many varieties show considerable horizontal resistance to the many diseases that attack them, probably as a result of the natural selection to which they have been subjected for a long time.
To substitute for this material a few improved varieties, genetically uniform, constitutes a dangerous attraction with respect to the diseases and their physiologic races. It is wise under Brazilian conditions to utilize more fully this horizontal resistance and to maintain the genetic variability, both already present. Suggestions are offered on how to attain these objectives.
