Competição entre a tiririca (Cyperus rotundus L) e o feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L)

Competition between dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and two nutsedge subspecies (Cyperus rotundus L. and C. rotundus ssp. tuberosus) was studied in Viçosa, Minas Gerais. The two subspecies accounted for 10% and 90% of the nutsedge population, respectively. Two pre-emergence herbicides, Nitralin and Metobromuron, were applied to control annual weeds, but did not affect nutsedge growth.
Maximum yields were obtained when nutsedge was mechanically removed at approximately 4 weeks after planting. Nutsedge continued to develop throughout the entire 90 day growing period during the wet season. However, during the dry season further growth was paralyzed after 5 weeks and competition for water resulted in decreased production in all treatments having nutsedge competition for 7, 9 and 12 weeks. Dry bean production was reduced 50% in the wet season and 80% in the dry season, when nutsedge was not controlled.
