Analysis of adaptation (FINLAY and WILKINSON, 1963) was applied to ten soybean varieties, grown in replicated trials for two seasons at nine sites in Rio Grande do Sul. The mean yield of all varieties for each site and season provided a quantitative description of the environments. In the "best" environment, the yield reached 4026 kg/ha, while in the "worst", the yield was 2157 kg/ha. For each variety a linear regression of individual yield on the mean yield for each environment was computated to measure the variety adaptation.
It was found that 'IAS-3', 'Bienville', 'Planalto', and 'IAS-1' are high-yielding varieties and less sensitive to changes in the environment. The varieties 'Bragg', ‘Curtis’ and 'IAS-2' showed average stability in all environments, but were relatively high yielding in the best environments. ‘Bossier’, 'Hardee', and 'Santa Rosa’ were also less sensitive to changes in the environment, but were less productive than the first four varieties (Figure 1).
