The behavior of two mixtures of six varieties of dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) was studied in Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Both mixtures were formulated with equal numbers of seeds of each variety and both had in common the varieties ‘Rico 23’ and 37-R.
After six plantings the varieties ‘Rico 23’ and ‘37-R’ immediately dominated the other components. In the other mixture these same varieties dominated through the third planting. Beginning with the forth planting, however, ‘Ricopardo 896’ began to substitute for ‘37-R’.
The most productive varieties and those with the small seeds had the greatest capacity to compete in mixtures. But other unidentified factors also influence this capacity.
