Resumo

The buccopharyngeal cavity of Gymnotus carapo is adapted to its feeding habits. This cavity can be related anatomically to the capture and retention of relatively small and agile animal prey, as evidenced by the type of oral and pharyngeal dentitions, the form and disposition of the gill rakers and the pattern of the mucous membrane. There is no pre-cardic preparation of food in this species. Other possible functions for this cavity, such as taste, would require histological studies to be confirmed.
