The "intelligentsia" has been considered by various scholars of the Sociology of Science as a social group of considerable importance in order to obtain an adequate analysis of the global interpretation of the world adopted by any par- ticular society.
In this article the author considers education as one of the spheres of the society wich reflets the ideology developed by the "intelligentsia". Considering specifically the Brazillian case the author points out from a historical perspective how the national "intelligentsia" uses education as a barrier to socioeconomic developraent.

His analysis runs fromthe Brazilian colonial period and the critical moment of the rupture of colonial thinking, represented by the events that occured near the end of the 19 century to the 1930 Revolution.
The author concludes that in spite of the disrupture wich occured in the ideological structure of the Brazilian "intelligentsia" it was structured in a from not much different fromthe previous and that this has contributed tothe creation of a wcultural lag, between the action of the elite and the necessities of socioeconomic development represented by the Brazilian reality.
