In this work, the author analyzes, in economical terms, the cost of reconstructing rural roads through an assistance program of the Caritas da Parõquia de Viçosa.
The data used were furnished by the secretary of Caritas, and multiple regression equations were fitted by the least square method.
The cost of reconstructing one quilometer of road was measured in terms of the food given to the people that worked on the road and also in terms of salaries that might have been paid. These costs were estimated since the food was not actually purchased. An effort was made to find out the influence of the number of work days perquilometer of road, of the rain and, of the size of worker families, on the variation in the costs,
The cost of reconstructing one quilometer of road, in terms of food was, almost twice the cost in terms of salary, meaning that volunteers received the double of salary when they were compensated with food.
The factors that were most influencing on the cost were labor and the topography of the road.
