The present study tried to identify the demand and supply functions for engenheiros-agronomos in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, using information from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras, and Sociedade Mineira de Engenheiros-Agronomos.
The demand was estimated as a function of per capita income and population of the state, while the supply was estimated as a function of the number of students enrroled 4 and 5 years before. Assuming three levels ofincrease in annu- al per capita income (1. 2 percent, 2.1 percent, and 3.0 per- cent), it was estimated that the excess of engenheiros-agronomos graduated in Minas Gerais will vary between 588 and 703 in 1975, assuming that other schools will not be created.
Among the possible policies that can be used to in- crease employment of engenheiros-agronomos the followings were analyzed: diversification of curriculum in the schools of agriculture, improvement of the actual utilization of the engenheiro-agronomo, increase the number of graduate courses, research to evaluate the contribution of the engenheiro-agronomo to economic development, and increase the productivity of institution employing engenheiros-agronomos.
