Resumo

The increment borer is used to obtain core samples of trees, and normally, used in the study of growth rings, even when thetrees are more or less of uniform age (approximately 30 years). Work utilizing this tool stimulated an anatomical study with the objective, in a great part, ofavoiding large lesions on standing trees when obtaining the core samples. This study also demonstrated the viability  and the advantages ofthe method of collecting core samples for anatamical studies. The only existing problem is that the increment borer available onthe market is not sufficiently strong topermit the recovery of hard wood samples.
