This experiment was conducted onthe experimental farm of the Departament of Fitotecnia of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais, in 1970.
The three classes of transplant size studied were 2,4 and 6 mm in diameter. Each class was given 2 treatments: 1) With pruning the leaves and the roots pruned 7 and 2 cm respectively from the point of differentiation, and 2) Without pru- ning.
The cultivar used was 'Baia Periforme Precoce'andthe experimental designusedwasa randomized complete blockwith 4 repetitions.
The following conclusions were obtained from the data:
1 - The transplant size affected significantly the number of harvested plants, the total bulb production and its components, excluding the noncommercial bulbs, and also the percentages of bolting plants and undeveloped bulbs.
2 - The total production the production of first-class bulbs, the average weigt of the bulbs, and the percentage ofbolting plants increased linearly with the increase of transplant size.
3 - The percentage of undeveloped bulbs decreased linearly with the increase of transplant size,
4 - The effect of transplant size on the number of harvested plants and the production of second-class bulbs was quadratic.
5 - The pruning of transplants reduced significantly the total production, the production of first-class bulbs, and the average weigth of the bulbs; and did not affect the number of harvested plants, the production of second-class bulbs, the production of noncommercial bulbs, and the percentages of bolting plants and undeveloped bulbs.
