Resumo

The relief povoked by erosion processes enabled us to perfom the study of a toposequence in Viçosa, Minas Gerais.

Twelve profiles were described, sampled and analized in three sites above terrace level in concave, convex, top and steepy sequence of the slopes which is typical in that area. Characteristics of B2 horizons were the main basis for interpretation. Close correlation was inferred between forms and slope positions and characteristics of these soils.

The general texture of soils was found to be clayey. They were also dystrophic, presented high percentage of organic matter, poor in Catt and Mg*t and in many cases they have only traces of Mg**. K* content decreases rapidly from top to low layers in the profiles.

The general order of age decrease of soils is: convex, top, concave and steepy slope parts.

An attempt was made to correlate the soils with classification systems used by researchers from Brazil, USA and FAO. The one used by FAO researchers was more adaptable to these soils, except for the Brazilian classification system. Thus, these soils are mainly Latosolic in the Brazilian system and Humic Ferralsols in the FAO system.

The authors suggest the inclusion in only one unit of both soils represented by top and convex lope part profiles.

Studies in terrace and flat top positions as well as detailed studies in the concave parts are suggested for more efficient agricultural use.
