Ten edible bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) yield trials were installed in two important production areas in the state of Bahia: Irecê and Tucano. The trials included 21 varieties most commonly grown in the two regions along with 5 varieties introduced from the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The trials were installed during both the "rainy" and "dry" periods of the 1968/69 and 1969/70 growing seasons. It can be concluded that:
1) Within the varieties common to the Irecê region, three stoed out above the others: 'Mulatinho Vagem Roxa Precoce', 'Mulatinho Vagem Roxa Tardio' and 'Mulatinho Vagem Roxa Cow mum', the last one being widely cultivated in the region.
2) The variety 'Mulatinho Favinha', the most popular in the Tucano region, was inferior to several varieties native to this area including 'Enrica Homem', 'Rim de Porco', and 'Bagajo'.
3) The variety 'Carioca' was the best of the varieties introduced. This variety has great commercial potential in theTucano region, but somewhat less potential in the Irecê region.
4) The following diseases exhibited importance in the two regions: anthracnose(Colletotrichum Lindemuthianum), rust (Uromyces phaseoli typicaland crown rot(Screrotium rolfsii).the last disease was encountered principally in the Tucano region.
