Influência do comprimento da estaca de figueira (Ficus carica L.) no seu "pegamento", enraizamento e desenvolvimento do sistema aéreo

This study was carried out at Viçosa, Minas Gerais, to determine the influence of cutting length of fig (Ficus carica L.) on the root setting and development of root system and aerial portion.
The lengths of cuttings used were: 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35cm long.
Cuttings of the variety 'Natal' were planted at a spacing of 15 by 15 cm. on a seed bed made up of local fertile soil to which 10 kg. of manure per square meter was added.
Maximum rooting success was obtained by use of 35, 30, 25 and 20 cm. cutting which gave a yield over 97% of good plants. Maximum stimulation of root system development was obtained when cuttings of 35 and 30 cm. were used, followed by those of 25 and 20 cm. in length.
In respect to aerial portion development the best results were obtained when 35 cm. long cuttings were used, followed by those of 30 and 25 cm. in length.
We can recommend then that cuttings of 25 cm. or longer should be used to obtain more vigorous young plants.
