Resumo

The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of three levels of amonium sulfate (0, 500 and 1000 kg/ha) on the growth of three garlic cultivars ("Barbado", "Amarante" and "Branco") when growtn with and without a mulch. For evaluating this effect, foliar analysis were conducted at different stages of the life cycle.

The leaf samples were analyzed for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The results were expressed as a percentage of the dry matter weignt of the plant material analyzed.

Under the conditions of this experiment, the following conclusion can be drawn:

1. The application of nitrogen fertilizer caused a pro- portionate increase in the N level of the leaves of the plants, but did not alter the levels of the other elements.

2. The cultivar 'Branco' had much higer levels of N, P and Mg than the cultivar "Amarante ',which accumulated Ca at levels higher than the other cultivars. The cultivar 'Barbado' had higher levels of P, L and Mg than the cultivar 'Amarante. This data suggests that the cultivar 'Amarante'is more sensitive to variations in soil fertility than the other two cultivars included in this experiment.

3. The presence of a mulch gave a proporcionatly greater accumulation of N, K and Ca in the leaf samples. But it caused a decrease in the level of P while not affecting the level of Mg.

4. The mulch caused a significant immobilization of the available soil nitrogen for 100 days after planting. This can be corrected by applying nitrogen fertilizer.

5. In general, for all three cultivars, the levels of N, P and K increased for 77 days and then decreased. The levels of Ca and Mg increased for 49 days, then decreased until near the and of the life cycle when the levels once again increased.
