Resumo

The objective of the present work was to study the effect of soil mulch and levels of nitrogen on productivity and related characters in three cultivars of garlic. The cultivars 'Amarante', 'Branco' and 'Barbado' were grown at nitrogen (as ammonium sulfate) levels of 0,500 and 1000 kg/ha in the presence and absence of mulch. The plants were harvested and stored for one month under natural conditions before the bulbs and straw were weighted and bulb number, bulb mean weight and the ratio straw weight/bulb weight were obtained.

The following conclusions were drawn from our results

1. With respect to bulb production, the variety 'Amarante showed the greatest responde to nitrogen fertilization, followed by 'Barbado' and 'Branco' respectively.

2. The varieties 'Barbado' and ‘Amarante’ produced more bulbs when mulched, while bulb production by the variety Branco was not influenced by mulching.

3. The variety 'Amarante' responded best to 500 kg/ha ammonium sulfate with mulching and to 600 kg/ha without mulching.

4. Mean weights of ‘'Amarante’ and 'Branco', were significantly greater than the mean weight of 'Barbado'

5. 'Amarante’ yielded a greater number of bulbs. The straw weight/bulb weight ratio was 0.36 for 'Amarante', 0,213 for 'Barbado’ and 0.223 for 'Branco’.

6. Mulch reduced bulb production and final stand of the variety 'Branco', but not of the other two varieties.
