The objectives of this experiment were to study the effect of ammonium sulfate applied at rates of 0,500, and 1000 kg/ha, plant spacings within the row of 5.0, 7.5 and 10 cm., and the presence or absence of mulch on the level of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in leaf samples of the garlic cultivar 'Amarante’.
Leaf samples were taken at various periods during the growing season. he samples consisted of the third leaf from the top which was fully developed. Leaf samples were obtained from 10 plants per treatment.
The results were expressed as a percentage of the dry matter used for the analysis.
The following conclusions can be drawn based on the conditions of this experiment.
1. Application of ammonium sulfate fertilizer resulted in an incresse in levels of N, P and Mg in leaf samples and a decresse in the level of K while the level of Ca was not affected.
2. Application of a mulch caused on incresse in the levels of N, K and Ca but did not alter the levels of P and Mg.
3. The mulch caused a significant immobilization of available soil N for 140 days. This could be corrected by applying N at planting time.
4. Plant spacing within the row had no significant effect on the levels of the elements analyzed in this experiment
5. In general, the levels of N, P and K reached a maximum during the period of 63 to 77 days and then declined. The level of Mg was stable for the first 63 to 91 days, then declined and finally increased again reaching a new maximum near the and of the growing season.
6. The level of Ca was quite variable during the entire growing season. High levels ocurred between 49 and 77 days and from 119 days to the and of the growing season.
