The importance of intervarietal additive by additive epistatic effects in determining the mean values for grain yield, number of ears per plant, number of kernel rows per ear, number of kernels per plant, average weight of 50 kernels and number of days to silking was evaluated in experiments with three varieties of corn (Zea mays L.) of widely separated geographic origins. Piramex, Catete and Lenha, the varieties studied, show great phenotypic differences in these characteristics. The three parent populations, three, F'1’s, three F2's and six backcrosses (F] x variety) were used, giving a total of 15 populations.
