Resumo

The effectiveness of anthraquinone (AQ) in alkaline pulping of Eucalyptus grandis wood was studied using different sulfidities (0, 5, 10, and 25 percent) and three levels of AQ (0, 0.02, and 0.10 percent). The results indicated that the presen- ce of AQ at the sulfidity levels investigated results in significant benefits in terms of faster pulping rates, lower alkali requirements, improved yields and higher pulp viscosities. AQ showed a higher effectiveness at lower or zero sulfidity. Pulps ma- nufactured with 5 and 10 percent sulfidity with addition of AQ showed strength values comparable or even higher than the conventional kraft pulp.
