Abstract

Matched planks of bicuiba (Virola sp.) and boards of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus saligna) were air and solar dried. The drying gradient during the insolation hours was always higher inside the solar dryer than outside. The drying time in the solar dryer to achieve a moisture content of 20% was about one-half that required in a yard. Bicuiba planks solar dried to a final moisture content of 11.3% showed the same amount of drying defects as the lumber air dried to a final moisture content of 17.4%. In eucalyptus, both methods caused high amounts of drying defects. Temperature and relative humidity conditions in the solar dryer were iuarsher than those called for in an appropriate kiln drying schedule for eucalyptus.
