After a brief review of studies of resistance to the rust Hemileia vastatrix among species of Coffea and a survey of sources of resistance to coffee leaf rust, alternative strategies for obtaining coffee cultivars with horizontal resistance to the disease were discussed. Selection within the New World gene pool was considered most feasible, even though the chance of finding germ plasm with horizontal resistance in a confined population grown in the absence of the pathogen for almost a quarter of a century-the Brazilian situation-seems very small.
