Two soils, a clay and a sandy loam, were treated with carboxymethylcellulose at the rates of 0.1% and 0.25%, after which the samples were submitted to dry sieving to soil characterization and compaction tests according regulations. The results showed that treatment with carboxymethylcellulose increased soil structural stability, aggregated soil particles of less diameter and augmented their physical constants, affected the moisture-density test and resulted in physical conditions of the soil favorable to plant growth.
