Resumo

This paper contains some data about Lund and Warming, two scientists who lived in Lagoa Santa. The surroundings of the region are briefly studied, as well as the vegetation conditioned by them. Special attention was given to ty study of the field vegetation — «campos limpos» and «campos cerrados».

The author compares the «cerrados» of Lagoa Santa with some others of S. Paulo, among Which he studied particularly those of Emas and Pirassununga.

Resuming the opinions of several scientists about the distribution of savanna and forest, the author explains the idea that the absence of forests does not always indicate that this is due to the naiural conditions of the place. It might be due to acidental causes on which man had direct or indirect influence: devastations by fires, cattle, etc.

Ecological studies which would throw some light on the quantity of water in the soil and on the ways it is used by the plant roots may be a valuable contribuition to solve this problem.

The author concludes by admitting that the «cerrados» sutidied in Lagoa Santa, as well as those of Emas and Pirassununga should not be considered as being of a primary type.
