With the objective of preparinga volume table for total volume inside bark, least square regression method were used to analise the equations Vi = by . Dl. H? andv=by b1D2H, where D equals diameter breast height outside bark, and where H equals total tree height. The results indicated greater efficiency for the logarithmic form. The coeficient of determination (R2) was 0,9850 for the first equation and 0,9832 for the second.
In order to determine if under or over estimation was ocuring for large or small trees, read and estimated volumes were compared, by diameter class.
Standard errors of the estimates for the above cited equations were compared using Furnival's index.
Merchantable volume was estimated for two minimum upper diameters and three stumps heights using the equation Vc = bg + bp? + b2H + bid? - by (gr) - Due to occurance of substantial overestimation, further analisis of this equation was eliminated.
The statistical results obtained, standard error of the estimate and R2, indicate that the second equation is rela ively efficient.
Calculation were based on a sample of 118 trees of Pinus elliottii, from 4 locatiin in the state of São Paulo and 1 location in the state of Minas Gerais, with all locations considered of ecologically appropriate for growth of this specie
Tables of total and conversion factors for merchantable volume were prepared using the 2 equations which provided
greatest precisions.
