In a study conducted in Vigosa at the Rural University of the State of Minas Gerais, production was measured on 6x 4,5 m plots of gordura grass (Melinis minutiflora), sempre verde (Panicum maximum), and pangola grass variety A-24 (Digitaria decumbens). Response to high level fertilization and to dry season irrigation was also measured. Gordura grass is the natural and common grass of this region. The site was a hillside of 20% slope having relatively low fertility.
Though all three specieshad given approximately equal vields (18 t/ha) during the rainy summer of early 1965, both gordura and sempre verde statistically out-yielded grass during the following dry season, respectively, 9.1,and 6.4 t/ha averaged over all treatments. This poor response shown by pangola is surprising since this species is usually considered to be a high producer and also moderately drought resistant. Perhaps low winter temperatures are a limiting factor. During the following spring, pangola Tecuperated and with sempre verde showed a significantly higher yield than gordura, 13.3, 12.4 and 9. 2 t/ha respectively.
Periodic ferticizations totalling 45/kg/ha N, 63P 05, and 15 K,0 gave highly significant increases in production for all species. Irrigation during the dry season also gave signifi~ cant increases. DTy season productions averaged over the three species were 5. 4 t/ha for check plots, 6.7 for those receiving irrigation alone, 7.1 for fertilization alone, and 9. 9 for plots both irrigated and fertilized.
