Sixteen Jersey calves were randomly assigned to two treatments with 4 males and 4 females per treatment. Treatment 1 consisted of a milk replacer composed of 75 kg. of dried skimmilk, 22. 5 kg. ground corn, 1. 5 kg of antibiotic (TM3+3), and 1 kilo bonemeal, which was fed to the calves at the rate of 100, 200, 300, or 400 grams per day depending on age until 70 days with water at the rate of 10% of body weight to a maximum of 4 kilos. Treatment 2 consisted of skimmilk, which was fed at the rate 10% of body weight to a maximum of 4 kilos until 50 days of age with decreasing amounts until 70 days of age. The following traits were measured: girth, height at withers and boby weight. Body weight was taken weeklyuntil 70 days of age and every second week from 70 to 224 days of age.
Body weight at birth, 70 days and 224 days was respectively 20. 0 kg, 41. 8 kg. , and 100. 2 kg for males and 21.2 kg., 41. 2kg. and 94.0 kg for females in treatment 1; 22. 8 kg., 40. 0 kg. and 91, 3 kg. for males and 19, 3kg. 40. 8kg. and 95. 5 kg. for females for treatment 2. Heart girth at birth, 70days and 224 days was respectively 60.5 cm., 78.0 cm., and 105, 5 cm. for males and 64.0 cm.,79.0 cm and 101.0 cm. for females for treatment 1; 63.3 cm., 76.0 cm., and 100.3 cm., for males and 61.3 cm., 74.8 cm., and 100. 8 cm. , for females in treat- ment 2, Height at withers at birth, 70 days and 224 days re- spectively was 59.5 cm., 73.3 cm., and 89.0 cm., for males and 63.7 cm., 74.3 cm., and 90.0 cm, for females in treatment 1; 64.0 cm., 75.2 cm., and 87.0 cm., for males and 59.2 cm., 70.3 cm., and 89.5 cm. for females in treatment 2.
Analysis of variance did not reveal any significant differences between treatments for any ofthe measured traits.
