Twenty-four 21 month old Holstein x Zebu heifers weighing 295 kilos initialy were used to study the effects of feeding rations containing a mixture of molasses plus urea (9:1) with perennial soybean hay (Glicine Javanica L), sorghum silage or molassesgrass pasture (Melinis minutiflora Beauv) during the dry season.
The four rations treatments were fed during 56 days of the dry season only and were as follows: Treatment 1 (T}) molasses plus urea (9:1) plus sorghum silage ad libitum plus 1,5 kilos of perennial soybeanhay per animal per day (T 2) molasses plus urea (9:1) plus sorghum silage ad libitum plus 3,0 kilos of perennial soybean hay per animal per day (T3) molasses plus urea (9.1) plus sorghum silage ad libitim (T,) molasses plus urea (9:1) plus molassesgrass pasture atthe rate of 1 head per hectare.
Autoclaved bonemeal and a mixture of 1 part dicalcium phosphate and 1 part salt were aloowed ad libitum during 56 days of the dry season and during 112 days rainy sesson all animals were maint tained on the same pasture of either Napier grass (Penisetum purpureum Schum) or Jaraguá grass (Hiparrhenya rufa (Nees Stapf).
The daiey gains during the frist 56 days period were 1.023, 0.912, 0.693 and 0, 440 kilos for treatments Tp Tas T3 and Tg respectively. No significant diference (P=0. 01) was observed between trestment T | and Tp; Tp and T3; or T3 and T4. However, those heifers fed molasses, urea and soybean hay (T| and T2) gained significantly (P<0. 01) faster than those maintained on pasture (T4).
No significant differences were observed between treatments in the total weight of the animals at the end of the 168 days experiment. A significant (P=0. 01) interaction was observed in weight dry and rainy seasons.
Average sorghum consumption per animal per day was 13.9, 12.1, and 17.1 kilus for T}, Tp, T3, respectuvely. The animals that consumed the largest of hay greatest dry matter intake.
