Resumo

The objective of this study was to test the effect of the pre-treatment of okra seed on germination, as well as to study certain anatomic aspects of the okra seed coat.

The 'Chifre-de-Veado' and 'IAC 1022' varieties were used for this experiment. The following substances were used for the pre-treatment of the seeds: alchohol, acetone, sulfuric acid, calcium phosphate, bicarbonate of soda and water.

The following conclusions were draw from the results of this study:

1. The seeds of two varieties behave differently when submitted to pre-treatment.

2. For the 'Chifre-de-Veado' variety, all treatment with the exception of the acetone, were equally efficient in giving uniform germination. For the 'IAC 1022" variety, all the treatments were equally efficient, but in this case, the acetone actually showed the best results.

3. None of the pre-treatments utilized acelerated the germination of the two varieties.

4. Based on the methods used in this study, there is no evidence that anatomic differences exist between the two varieties.
