Resumo

The effect of varying levels of soil moisture on the production of wheat was studied using soil moisture tension of 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 and 9.0 atmospheres in addition to the natural level.

The soil moisture tension was measured using the COLMAN method with cells placed at a depth of 12 cm in the center of each plot. Two irrigations of 20 mm each were made to the entire experimental area immediately after planting, to assure uniform germination of the seeds. Other irrigations of 30 mm were made when the soil moisture tension reached a predetermined level.

The highest productions were obtained at moisture tensions of 3.0 and 9.0 atmospheres, utilizing 14 and 8 irrigations, respectively, during the growing season.

The yields at the low soil moisture tensions (0.5 and 1.0 atm) and the natural level were not statistically different.

These lower tensions caused a lengthening of the normal growth cycle, which was accompanied by increased vegetative growth and a greater degree of lodging.
