Six cross-bred Holstein-Zebu cows were used in a switchback design to compare the effect of poultry litter and cottonseed meal on the milk production of grazing cows during the dry season.
The animals had an average daily milk production of 9,5 kg and were kept on pasture of molassesgrass (Melinie minutiflora, Beauv) during the night and on pasture of angola-grass (Brachiaria mutica) during the day. The treatments studied were as follow: Treat. A grazing only; Treat. B grazing concentrate containing 20% of crude protein (531 of ground ear corn +47% of cottonsead meal); and Treat. C grazing concentrate containing 20% of crude protein (50% of ground ear corn 25% of cottonseed meal 25% of poultry litter). The concentrate was given at the rate of 1 kg per each 3 kg of fat correted milk.
Based on the data obtained it can be concluded that:
1. The feeding of concentrate did not increase the milk production of grazing cows. However, it should be emphasized that this conclusion is partially due to the good condi- tions of the pastures used, to the low potential of milk production of the animals utilized, and probably to the short duration of the trial;
2. Fifty percent of the cottonseed meal can be replaced by the poultry litter, in concentrate mixture for lactating cows without affecting either milk production or live weight. The poultry litter can be used to lower the cost of the concentrate for lactating cows if its price is lower than that of the cottonseed meal.
