The nutritive value of ground ear corn (maize), cotton seed meal and poultry litter was studied in a digestibility trial with sheep; and the effect of the combination of those ingredients on the digestibility of the nutrients was determined.
The coefficients of digestibility obtained for ground ear corn, cotton seed meal and poultry litter when fed alone were, respectively: 64.0, 62.2 and 28.1% for dry matter; 65.2, 64.4 and 66.7% for gross energy and 41.5, 75.1 and 50.1 for crude protein.
The coefficients of digestibility for cotton seed meal and poultry litter, obtained indirectly from treatments IV and V, with MDPS taken as the base ration, were, respectively: 70.8 and 30.5% for dry matter, 69.7 and 72.9% for gross energy and 76.4 and 66.5% for crude protein.
The nutritive values of ground ear corn, cotton seed meal, and poultry litter when fed exclusively, expressed in terms of natural material were, respectively: 3.3, 24.0 and 5.9% digestible protein and 2473, 2595 and 1627 Kcal/kg of digestible energy. The cotton seed meal and poultry litter showed, respectively, nutritive values of 24.4 and 7.8% digestible protein and 2808 and 1779 Kcal/kg of digestible energy when associated with MDPS.
The apparent digestibility of the nutrients of cotton seed meal and poultry litter was improved when those ingredients were fed in a mixture with MDPS.
