This paper presents the results of an exploratory study on the effect of planting depth on soybean seedling emergence and some plant characteristics, carried out in Viçosa and Capinópolis, State of Minas Gerais.
Three planting depths were used: 3, 6 and 9 cm in a randomized complete-block design.
In Viçosa the planting depth of 9 cm significantly reduced the seedling emergence. There was no significant difference between the planting depths of 3 and 6 cm. Plants were significantly shorter and less lodging ocurred at the 9 cm depth. There was no effect of planting depth on pod height and grain yield.
Fewer plants emerged in Capinópolis than in Viçosa. The seedlings at the 9 cm planting depth emerged significantly better than at 3 and 6 cm depths. There were no significant effects of the planting depth on plant lodging, first pod height, plant height and grain yield.
