Resumo

The demand for food products required by an increasing population has forced countries to increase food prodution to supply their needs, Experimental research has been geared to increasing productivity, to help meet this growing demand for food. The objective of this study was to determine the most economically feasible levels of nitrogen and phosphorus for corn production in the município of Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro. The experimental data was ajusted to a quadratic function and the following equation was obtained.

Y = 2,651.36 + 10.0817N - 0.0237NZ + 2.4846P - 0.0503P2 + + 0.0142NP

The marginal yield increase obtained with P05 was shown to be greater than that obtained with N. The optimal fertilizer level was 168.20 kg/ha of P05 and 98,09 kg/ha of N, which yielded 6.005 kg/ha of corn. The functions for the demand of inputs and product supply were derived for a long term time period. The price during this study showed the price elasticity of supply to be less than (0.30) indicating the small effect of corn price variation on the quantity supplied. The demand for P in the long run is more inelastic than for N. This indicates that changes in price will tend to have less effect on the quantity of phosphorus used than on the quantity of nitrogen.

Economics studies of experimental data are an indispensable complement to the adequate aplication of experimental results. Information provided by the present study will benefit farm management and agricultural policies.
