Applications of 0, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm of 2-chloroethyl- phosphonic acid (ethephon) by immersion for 2 minutes were tested to degreen persimmon fruits (Diospyros kaki cv.'Fuyu'). The 1,000 and 500 ppm treatments induced complete degreening of the fruits in 3 to 5 days. The 250 and 0 ppm ethephon treatments achieved the same result in 10 to 12 days.
Applications of 0, 250, 500 and 1,000 ppm ethephon by im- mersion for 1 minute and 250 and 12,500 yg ethephon to the base of the fruit were tried to remove astringency from persimmon fruits (Diospyros kaki cv.'Rama Forte').The 12,500 ug ethephon treatment removed fruit astringency in 2days while the 250 ug, 500 and 1,000 ppm achieved the same result in 3 days. The 250 ppm treatment removed astringency from the fruits in 6 days while the control fruits lost their astringency in a very ir- regular manner. These results indicate that the amount of ethephon applied and the form of application were as important as the concentration used.
