A study was conducted in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, to determine the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers and planting dates on grain protein content and grain protein yield per hectare in grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench).
‘Two experiments were performed in 1972-73, one in the rainy season and the other in dry season. The sprouting (Ratoon) of the rainy season planting after harvest was studied also. Treatments were: three levels of nitrogen fertilization (0, 50 and 100 ke/ha of N), three levels of phosphorus fertilization (0, 60 and 120 ke/ha of P205) and three planting dates. Only nitrogenous fertilizer was applied to the sprouting of the rainy season experiment.
Nitrogenous fertilizer increased grain protein yield in all cases, and the grain protein content in second harvest of the rainy season experiment. Even though phosphorus fertilization had not increased grain protein content, it increased grain protein yield in the rainy and dry season trials. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization and planting dates acted synergistically on grain protein content in the dry season experiment. In general higher grain protein contents and lower grain protein yields per hectare were found in the dry season harvests (dry season experiment and the second crop of the rainy season experiment). The grain protein yields per hectare were more dependent on grain yield than on the grain protein content. The grain protein content varied inversely with grain yield, especially in relation to planting dates.
