A study of selection for slow and rapid germination in the brachytic-2 maize variety ‘Piranao’ was carried out at the Federal University of Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The stratified mass selection used in this work utilized 250 samples in a germinator at 30 = 1°C. Each sample consisted of a Petri dish containing 10 seeds. Observations were made at 24-hours intervals. In the selection for earliness of germination the first seed to germinate in each Petri dish was taken and, for lateness, the last seed to germinate was selected. The recombination among the selected individuals gave the advanced cycles: Cycle I for lateness, and Cycles I and II for earliness.
