Seeds of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars Rio Tibagi and Carioca were harvested from the following treatments of an experiment: 0 - not fertilized; 1 - fertilized with macronutrients; 2 - fertilized with macronutrients + Zn, Cu, B, and Mo. Those seeds, called treatments 0, 1, and 2, were tested in a second expe- riment, at two levels of fertilization (the same as 0 and 1 of the first experiment). In a third experiment, seeds 0, 1, and 2 harvested from the non-fertilized (0) plots of the second experiment (now called treatments 0-0, 1-0, and 2-0) were studied in plots fertilized with 30 kg/ha of P2O5. There were no significant differences among treatments 0, 1, and 2 (second ex- periment) and among treatments 0-0, 1-0, and 2-0 (third experiment) in relation to yield, number of pods per plant, average seed weight, and grain commercial type. Also treatments 0, 1, and 2 did not show significant differences among numbers of seeds per pod. Seeds 0 produced a lower final plant population than seeds 1 and 2. Rio Tibagi seeds 0-0 produced a lower plant population than the seeds 1-0 and 2-0, but their yield was not decreased, because the lower number of plants was compensated by a higher number of seeds per pod. Fertilization in the first and second experiments increased the P and Ca content of the leaves, but decreased their K and Zn content; in the seeds, fertiliza- tion increased the K content and decreased the Zn content. No significant diffe- rences were found among P, K, Ca, and Mg leaves contents of the plants produced by seeds 0, 1, and 2, but seeds 1 produced plants with lower Zn content in the leaves. No significant differences were found among treatments 0, 1, and 2 in rela- tion K, Ca, Mg, and Zn percentage and quantity, and in relation to P quantity in the harvested seeds. However, the greatest percentage of P in the seeds was obtained when seeds 0 and 2 received fertilization 0 and 1, respectively.
