In an experiment conducted at Viçosa, 13 species and varieties of tropical soilage grasses were evaluated for potential productivity and response to fertilizers. Stage of cutting was based on the phenology of the grass, usually at the seedemergence stage. Total dry-forage yields in 13 months varied from 21.9% 4.5 metric ton/ha for Axonopus scoparius to 71.9 1 4.5 metric ton/ha for 'Mineiro', a variety of P.purpureum. Species and varieties were statistically different (P< 0. 01).
Among the varieties of P. purpureum, 'Pôrto Rico' showed lowest yields. Tripsacum fasciculatum yielded less forage than all the varieties of P. purpureum. Setaria sphacelata, a species new to this region, gave relatively good yield (41.9F 4.5 metric ton/ha of dry forage).
