Resumo

Anexperiment was conducted ona weedy molassesgrass pasture growing onan acid, low fertility soil in order to compare methods of soil preparation and chemical fertilization on es- tablishment of pangolagrass (Digitaria decumbens Stent.), suwanee bermudagrass (CynodondactylonPers) or molassesgrass (Melinis minutiflora Beauv. ).

Treatment effects were judged on the basis of the botanical composition of each experimental unit and upon visual estimations of forage available in each plot. Observations were made during the establishment period of the grasses and one year after planting (i. e. early during the next rainy season).

Soil preparation treatments involving: 1)complete plowing and discing, 2)opening of furrows, and 3) opening of small holes, had no effects on the establishment of any of the grass species. A beneficial effect of fertilization was observed only with molassesgrass. Under the experimental conditions employed, remnant molassesgrass allowed no room for pangolagrass or suwanne bermudagrass to become established.
