This experiment deals with methods for cucumber seed extraction.
Ripened fruits were crushed by machine and submitted to the following treatments: a) seeds washed immediately after crushing, followed by the addition oflime, Ca(OH), then washed and treated with 38% HCI; b) seeds fermented for four days, then washed; c) seeds fermented for six days, then washed; d) seeds treated with 38% HCI1 (7, 5 liters per ton of crushed ma- terial), for 30 minutes then washed; e) seeds treated with 96% HZSO4 (2,5 liters per ton of crushed material)for 30 minutes, then washed; f) seeds treated with 25% ammonium hydroxide (12 liters per ton of crushed material) for 30 minutes, followed by 38% HC1(7,5liters per ton of crushed material) thenwashed.
Chemical treatments permitted a faster extractionthan fermentation, Seeds treated with HC1 and H2S04 were lighter and had abetter appearance, Tretaments (a) and (f) showed significantly better seed germination 15 days afte r treatment, however 90 days later there was no significant difference between treatments,
